The mission of Island Lutheran Church PreSchool is to provide a loving and safe Christian environment where children develop their readiness for school and life through the guidance of a dedicated, professional staff.
In order to accomplish the Mission Statement we will:
Teach and model the Christian faith
Provide a developmentally appropriate Christian curriculum
Encourage each child to grow socially, emotionally, intellectually, and spiritually through learning and play activities
Provide a secure and safe facility
We Show the Love of Christ
Caring, Christian teachers share the Word of God daily with children and families. Strengthening a home, school and church partnership, through an education of the whole child, students are prepared and equipped for a life of Christian citizenship and discipleship.
Island Lutheran Church and PreSchool are affiliated with the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod. As such we believe that the bible is God's word in it's entirety and that people are saved by faith in Jesus' death and resurrection for our sake. A more complete faith description can be found at lcms.org

Learning in the Classroom
Our developmentally appropriate curriculum encourages each of our 3, 4, and 5-year-old children to grow socially, emotionally, and spiritually while learning through play. We believe that preschool age children are curious, capable, and competent learners, therefore we offer hands-on opportunities for them to explore the world around them. A thematic approach to education allows our children to pose questions, make discoveries, and share their ideas and excitement. Our teachers partner with our children by listening closely to what they say, allowing us to guide them and act as a resource for satisfying their curiosity. Our indoor and outdoor areas are carefully designed with learning in mind and serve to essentially become a third teacher for our children.
Island Lutheran Preschool offers an Art Studio experience to our children. Each studio session offers an enrichment lesson based on a fine artist and/or genre. In addition, the studio offers a variety of art centers allowing the children to be creative, explore the elements of art, and gain a further appreciation of the visual arts.
Learning Outside the Classroom
Extracurricular activities are also a part of our learning. Children develop and explore their personal interests through experiences such as literacy time with a Hilton Head Island librarian, monthly visits from local firefighters, Chapel with the Pastor, and loving interactions with Island Lutheran Church’s Sasha Comfort Dog.
Field trips into the community are scheduled in order for children to explore such topics as environmental science, occupations in the world around us, and personal safety.
My name is Deiha Torin. I began my work in Early Childhood Education over 25 years ago. I worked in a kindergarten classroom and a daycare center in Pennsylvania until my family moved to South Carolina in 1996. I was fortunate to work with many great teachers who became mentors and fueled my passion for Early Childhood Education. Working in other programs, I was confined to following the philosophy of that particular center.
In 2000, I was hired as the Director and Lead Teacher at Island Lutheran PreSchool. The mission and philosophy at Island Lutheran PreSchool was the perfect fit for my beliefs and an opportunity to use my creative talents and joy for teaching preschool age children to shine. I consider myself a natural learner and enjoy learning about the early childhood field and child development. I strive to implement the best practices to create a child and family centered environment where children explore their world around them to grow stronger in their faith and are prepared to be lifelong learners.
My name is Rachel Schaffer, I have been teaching since 2006. I started out as a substitute teacher while working on my Child Development Associate credential. This job quickly turned into a teaching position.
I am originally from Ohio and lived in Charlotte before moving to Bluffton where my family has now lived since 2016.
